Harvey hadn't played the game before, at least not often enough that she could trust him to know the rules. She snapped open his billfold and rifled through the hefty wad of $20 bills. When the count soared past the $500 mark, she knew she had made the right choice. |

There were $750 in total. She leafed to the halfway mark in the wad of bills, took them and stuffed the rest back in his billfold. Her half was bunched into a tight little roll and tucked behind a stack of towels in a small cabinet under the sink. With the billfold carefully concealed in a towel, she primped one final time, touched her fingers to her hair, dabbed at the corner of her mouth and went back into the darkened bedroom. |
